Purpose

To enhance the overall educational and learning experience for students, their parents and/or guardians in the Detroit Public School system by providing programs and activities to students before and after regular school hours.

Origin

The Detroit Positive Youth Development Collaborative, a cross-sector group of community leaders, was the catalyst for this comprehensive school/community partnership. Members of the Collaborative include Detroit Public Schools, Schools of the 21st Century, the City of Detroit, Communities in Schools, the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission, Children’s Aid Society, The Children’s Center and City Connect Detroit. Through this collaboration began Cohort A. The lead agencies chosen to provide after-school programs were Communities in Schools and the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission.

Under Cohort B, the lead agencies chosen to provide after-school programs were Children’s Aid Society, Schools of the 21st Century and The Children’s Center.

  1. Children’s Aid Society partners with Detroit Public Schools and vendors to provide youth enrichment, youth development, and family service needs to at-risk youth in Detroit.

  2. Funding for the Children’s Aid Society/DPS program is provided by 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

  3. The after-school program focuses on positive youth development in four target areas: academic enrichment, youth development, enrichment, and family services, offering a variety of diverse activities to meet the needs of a wide range of youth.

  4. Each school will recruit a maximum of 60 students. Service providers will work with a 1-to-15 ratio. A certified teacher is assigned as a coordinator for each school. Other key personnel include a Project Director (oversees the project); Site Coordinators (10 coordinators, one at each of 10 schools, ensure the day-to-day operation on site), and certified teachers (four per site for a total of 40). Target students are 6th- to 8th-graders in 15 middle schools. Administrators, counselors, teachers, social workers, and parents will identify, inform, and recruit students from high-need populations.
